/johngotts John, recognizing that the expand / collapse function will essentially affect every single one of my posts - since they are almost all even above 500 characters - I have to say that at first I was downtrodden by the idea, seeing everyone giving a thumbs up and realizing that my vote probably wouldn't compete against the popular vote.

Then I thought, well, they'll just have to press the expand or read full text button to read my posts. I understand that when I come online for an hour or two, I write about a dozen very long posts, that is I understand that it pushes other people's posts outside the limits of the single page.. So people who just moments ago wrote a message, their message is already bounced off the first page..

And so for this reason, so I can keep writing long posts and keep Chum.ly clean, I am in total accord with the read full text, expand / collapse text idea.

I have trouble keeping it short, I try my best to be concise, it's just not going to happen anytime soon. and I seriously don't want to keep bouncing people's updates off the page. I think it sucks for everybody.

The question of collapsing posts that are longer than 500 characters isn't an easy one. And your post does raise - in a way - the issue of content vs. flow.

Where twitter is "flow", blogspot is "content". And chum.ly is right in the middle, being both and neither. Perhaps we'll simply have to evaluate the 500 limit for a day or two. Get the feel for it. Then we'll see if we need to push that limit either way or think differently.

I'm getting close to 500 chrs now, and there's still plenty of room left until I start pushing people offscreen. Is there perhaps a way to set the limit according to the size of the post instad. A max number of lines, perhaps? (15?) Or perhaps set the limit so that when the post overflows the editing frame (i.e. where you write your posts - I'm not sure about the correct term), it gets "cut" there when posting?

/lancefestivalen /alex /johngotts - yes - there was a period of about a half hour yesterday (my yesterday) when a change in the style sheet intended to adjust the location of the Follow button, which appears on a person's profile page, unintentionally had a wider affect and caused the problem. When I realized the side effect, I put it back to the way it was and took a note to create a new style class for separation of those two versions of the Follow/Unfollow controls. If you are still seeing the problem clear your browser cache.
